How Long Does It Take to Get a CDL?
2026 ยท 5 min read
The realistic answer: 4 to 8 weeks from start to finish โ assuming you pass everything on the first try.
Step 1: Written Knowledge Tests (1-2 weeks)
If you study consistently, you can pass the written tests in 1-2 weeks. Most people need 40-80 hours of study time. Take practice tests daily.
Step 2: Get Your CLP (1 day + 14-day wait)
Once you pass the written tests, you get your CLP the same day at the DMV. But federal law requires a 14-day waiting period before you can take the skills test.
Step 3: ELDT Training (1-4 weeks)
Federal ELDT (Entry-Level Driver Training) applies to all first-time CDL applicants: theory training can be completed online (10-20 hours), and behind-the-wheel training with a registered provider (10+ hours on-range + 10+ hours on-road).
Step 4: CDL Skills Test (scheduling + test day)
After the 14-day CLP hold, schedule your skills test. Wait times vary by location: 1-4 weeks. The test itself takes about 2-3 hours.
