Choosing between a Class A and Class B CDL is one of the most important career decisions you'll make as a new driver. Here's everything you need to know.
The Core Difference
Class A CDL: For combination vehicles where the Gross Combination Weight Rating (GCWR) exceeds 26,001 lbs AND the towed vehicle weighs over 10,000 lbs. Think tractor-trailers, 18-wheelers, flatbeds with heavy loads.
Class B CDL: For single vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 26,001 lbs or more, or for towing a vehicle under 10,000 lbs. Think delivery trucks, city buses, dump trucks.
Can You Upgrade from B to A?
Yes. You can take the Combination Vehicles test while holding a Class B CDL to add Class A privileges. Many drivers start with B (faster, cheaper training) and upgrade to A after getting experience.
Salary Comparison
Class B new drivers: $45,000โ$60,000/year. Regional and local routes, predictable schedules.
Class A new drivers: $50,000โ$70,000/year. OTR drivers can reach $80,000โ$100,000+ with experience and endorsements.
