CDL requirements are largely federal, but states have some variation in fees, testing procedures, and endorsement specifics.
Federal CDL Requirements (All States)
- Age: 18 to drive intrastate, 21 to drive interstate. 21+ for HAZMAT.
- Valid regular driver's license with clean driving record.
- Medical card: DOT physical exam (Form MCSA-5876) every 2 years.
- Proof of identity: birth certificate or passport.
- Social Security number verified at the DMV.
- Pass knowledge tests before getting CLP.
- Complete ELDT training before taking skills test.
State-Specific Variations
Texas: CLP fee ~$25, CDL fee ~$60-80. 14-day CLP hold required.
California: Additional state-specific air brake test. Higher fees (~$80-100 total).
Florida: Online knowledge test available for renewal. CLP valid for 1 year.
New York: Additional state CDL written test required. Higher medical standards for HAZMAT.
Medical Requirements
DOT physical exam every 2 years. Checks: vision, hearing, blood pressure, cardiovascular health, and physical ability to operate a commercial vehicle safely.
